A Tale of Two Fields: A Complex Dynamic Systems Perspective on Generative AI in Language Teaching
A free webinar from TESOL's Computer-Assisted Language Learning Interest Section (CALL-IS). Language teachers and teacher educators increasingly face consequential decisions about generative AI — what to adopt, permit, and convey to students — often without understanding how these systems operate. This session examines prediction, embeddings, and attention as they relate to observed model behavior and considers why language teaching has a distinctive stake in these technologies. Drawing on complex dynamic systems theory, it explores the challenges generic technologies face in accommodating the complexity of language, demonstrates the live, no-code development of small applications designed for a specific lesson and group of learners, and examines systematic errors in AI pronunciation assessment, arguing for interdisciplinary collaboration between applied linguistics and computer science.

AI in Action: Getting Started with AI and Student Learning (morning cohort)
Part 1 of TESOL's four-part AI in Action series. Understand what AI can and can't do for language learning, and set classroom norms for appropriate use. Morning cohort, 8:00-9:30 AM Eastern. Price shown is the nonmember rate for the full series; TESOL members pay $95 standard or $35 reduced. Sessions are recorded and available to participants for a month.

AI-Resilient Materials: From Foundational Principles to Practical Design
A free webinar from TESOL's Materials Writers Interest Section (MWIS). As Generative AI reshapes language education, materials writers face a critical challenge: how to design learning resources that prevent AI-dependent substitution while maintaining pedagogical rigor. The session approaches AI resilience from three perspectives: foundational principles and capabilities for content creators; cognitive realities and student engagement in AI-saturated environments; and practical design — actionable task designs, templates, and classroom-tested AI-based materials that mandate deep cognitive processing. Presented by Dr. Mathias Schulze (San Diego State University), Rawan Saqfalhett (EFL teacher and PhD candidate, Universitat Rovira i Virgili), and Joshua Yardley (ELT materials writer).
- Fri, October 9 · 12:00 PM EDT
Understanding Nonnative Speech: Speech Training and Cognitive and Attitudinal Factors
A free research webinar from TESOL's International Teaching Assistants Interest Section (ITAIS). Native-nonnative communication research has focused mostly on how nonnative speakers can sound more nativelike; this session flips the lens to native listeners' role in perceiving and understanding nonnative speech. Dr. Jimin Kahng (University of Mississippi) presents a study of 127 American English speakers comparing training with scripted vs. unscripted L2 speech, and examines how listeners' cognitive and attitudinal factors shape comprehension — with implications for language teaching and international teaching assistant training.

AI in Action: Guiding AI Use in the Classroom (morning cohort)
Part 2 of TESOL's four-part AI in Action series. Practical strategies for teaching students to use AI for drafting, revising, and practicing English without shortcutting their own learning. Morning cohort, 8:00-9:30 AM Eastern. Price shown is the nonmember rate for the full series; TESOL members pay $95 standard or $35 reduced. Sessions are recorded and available to participants for a month.

Multimodal English Teaching
A free webinar from TESOL's Applied Linguistics Interest Section (ALIS). Drawing on the socio-semiotic approach to education, this session advocates for multimodal approaches to teaching English as an additional language — combining oral communication, writing, images, and video rather than separating language strands. It covers classroom-ready approaches including multimodal identity texts, films as resources for multimodal literacy, graphic novels, reading literature through drawing, and digital storytelling. Presented by Dr. Andreea Cervatiuc (University of British Columbia), Chair of TESOL's Applied Linguistics Interest Section.

AI in Action: AI Tools for Lesson Planning (morning cohort)
Part 3 of TESOL's four-part AI in Action series. Use AI tools (like ChatGPT and Claude) to design and level classroom materials — bring an existing lesson plan, worksheet, or assessment to adapt live. Morning cohort, 8:00-9:30 AM Eastern. Price shown is the nonmember rate for the full series; TESOL members pay $95 standard or $35 reduced. Sessions are recorded and available to participants for a month.
