Beyond Taipei 101: How Mountains Shape Taiwan
Presented by Liang Yin Lin (National Taiwan University GERP). Nearly 70% of Taiwan is mountainous. This talk introduces Taiwan as a mountain island and explores how mountains shape its geography, Indigenous cultures, environmental history, settlement, mobility and everyday life, and how forests, trails and peaks shape ideas of nature, identity and belonging. Includes a classroom discussion on teaching island geography through maps, landscape and spatial storytelling, a case study on human-nature relationships, and a landscape-observation activity using photography and visual journaling. Part of the EASC / NCTA "Exploring Taiwan: Geography, History, and Agriculture" series with NTU's Geopolitical Ecology Research Platform. Free; 2 PD hours. Teachers who attend all four sessions receive a copy of Taiwan Travelogue by Yang Shuang-Zi.

Who Owns the Night Sky? Teaching the Contested Landscape of Hehuan Mountain Dark-Sky Park through Negotiation Theater
Presented by Hong-Bing Ong (National Taiwan University GERP). Explores landscape, scientific knowledge and Indigenous peoples at Taiwan's Hehuan Mountain Dark-Sky Park, tracing the region from Japanese colonial rule and postwar KMT authoritarian control through post-martial-law tourism to the controversies around the park. Participants are guided through "Negotiation Theater", a role-play method based on Bruno Latour's actor-network theory in which students represent Indigenous peoples, astronomers, tourism operators, governments, plants and animals and the starry sky, with guidance on building related lessons. Part of the EASC / NCTA "Exploring Taiwan" series. Free; 2 PD hours. Attend all four sessions to receive a copy of Taiwan Travelogue by Yang Shuang-Zi.

From Island-Hopping to the First Island Chain: Visible and Invisible American Power in Okinawa and Taiwan
Presented by Hui Hsin Kuo (National Taiwan University GERP). Traces how WWII "island-hopping" footholds became a lasting network of American military power in East Asia, comparing Okinawa, with its highly visible base presence and anti-base movements, and Taiwan, where American advisers, servicemen and operations were more dispersed and often obscured in official narratives and public memory. Asks how military power becomes visible or invisible, including through servicemen's everyday encounters beyond the bases. Part of the EASC / NCTA "Exploring Taiwan" series. Free; 2 PD hours. Attend all four sessions to receive a copy of Taiwan Travelogue by Yang Shuang-Zi.
